Great Torrington. GREAT TORRINGTON, in the deanery of that name and in the hundred of Fremington, is a market-town 10 miles from Barnstaple, about 36 from Exeter, and 192 from London. No record appears of a grant of the market, which is held by prescription. There was a fair as early as the year 1220.
