In 2008, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Sabbioneta – which is a village of Mantua – and, in 2016, it was elected the Italian Capital of Culture.

Mantua g rew into one of the major art and culture hubs of the Renaissance. The city attracted famous artists like Leon Battista Alberti, Andrea Mantegna, and Giulio Romano.
