The state is roughly rectangular in shape, with a panhandle of Fairfield county extending to the southwest on the New York border. The state’s greatest east-west length is about 110 miles (180 km), and its maximum north-south extent is about 70 miles (110 km).

Following disastrous floods in 1936, a federal project involving 20 dams and reservoirs was begun. A dam at Wilder, Vermont, has a reservoir 46 miles (74 km) long. The lower 60 miles (97 km) of the river are tidal.
