The current King of the United Kingdom and King of Norway are agnatic members of this house, meanwhile the King of Spain and King of Denmark are matrilineal members.

It assumed the name Hesse und bei Rhein in 1816 to distinguish itself from the Electorate of Hesse, which had formed from neighbouring Hesse-Kassel.

Alpirsbach Abbey, founded by the Hohenzollerns in 1095. Zollern, from 1218 Hohenzollern, was a county of the Holy Roman Empire.
