Its top panel dramatically illustrated the Regent's assassination in Linlithgow in 1570, portraying him as dying for his country, then riven by civil war.

Sir William Murray of Castleton married Lady Margaret, daughter of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Atholl (see Earl of Atholl ). Sir William was one of the many Scottish noblemen killed at the Battle of Flodden in 1513.
