His secretary John Wood and Mary's wardrobe servant Servais de Condé made inventories of her clothes and jewels. She had asked an Edinburgh goldsmith James Mosman to converting a chain set with little diamonds into a hairband garnishing.

In 1578 Herries helped to force the resignation of James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton, regent of Scotland during Mary’s captivity.
