Like many surviving Scottish castles, Glamis – just outside Forfar and 30 minutes from Dundee – has many tales to tell. For over 650 years (since 1372) it has been the ancestral seat to the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne.

Public access offers glimpses into the castle’s past, including Janet Douglas’s story, Lord Glamis’ wife, who was falsely accused of witchcraft and later burned at the stake in the 16th century.

When her husband Claude inherited the title of Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne in 1904, she automatically became known as Cecilia Bowes, Lyon Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne.
