Hace 3 días · John Dudley, who in 1551 was created Duke of Northumberland, was executed in 1553, when, since he was attainted, his estates reverted to the Crown. Ambrose Dudley, the eldest surviving son of John and attainted with him, was restored in 1558 and created Baron Lisle and Earl of Warwick in 1561.
18 de may. de 2024 · The lordship of Claverdon was granted in Dec. 1547 to John Dudley, Earl of Warwick and afterwards Duke of Northumberland, and Joan his wife. After the execution of the duke the manor was assigned, in June 1554, to his widow Joan for life.
Hace 6 días · In 1547 King Edward VI gave the manor to John Dudley, Earl of Warwick and Duke of Northumberland; but on his execution it again passed to the Crown, and was granted in November 1554 to Edward Sutton, Lord Dudley. In 1566 Queen Elizabeth gave the reversion of the manor to Robert, Earl of Leicester, and his heirs.

In contrast, Somerset's successor the Earl of Warwick, made Duke of Northumberland in 1551, was once regarded by historians merely as a grasping schemer who cynically elevated and enriched himself at the expense of the crown. It would be interesting to learn how far great landowners like the 4th Earl of Bedford or the 3rd Earl of Essex or the 2nd Earl of Warwick shared that view.
