John's inheritance included the lordship of Barnard Castle (County Durham), of Bywell (Northumberlandshire) and of Hitchin (Hertfordshire) and he also had four lordships in France (Bailleul-en-Vimeu, Hélicourt, Dompierre, Hornoy).
