Dates shown are of nomination or installation; coloured rows indicate sovereigns, princes of Wales, medieval ladies, modern royal knights and ladies, and stranger knights and ladies, none of whom counts toward the 24-member limit.

'Stranger/Extra Knights Companion of the Garter' and 'Stranger/Extra Ladies Companion of the Order of the Garter' are the equivalent of 'Honorary Knights' and 'Honorary Dames' in other orders.

Those who receive two orders of chivalry, the Most Noble Order of the Garter and the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, are invested with the order’s insignia at separate specific ceremonies just for those orders.
