The Battle of Lepanto was a naval engagement that took place on 7 October 1571 when a fleet of the Holy League, a coalition of Catholic states arranged by Pope Pius V, inflicted a major defeat on the fleet of the Ottoman Empire in the Gulf of Patras.

Juan de Austria fue nombrado almirante general, para quien el papa se deshizo en elogios y antes de partir le hizo saber que iba a combatir por la fe católica y por eso Dios le concedería la victoria.
The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was actually instituted under another name: In 1571 Pope Pius V instituted “Our Lady of Victory” as an annual feast in thanksgiving for Mary’s patronage in the victory of the Holy League over the Muslim Turks in the Battle of Lepanto.

En esta batalla las tropas cristianas de la Liga Santa lucharon contra las turcas otomanas con el objetivo de impedir su expansión por el Mediterráneo occidental. Resultó herido de gravedad en un brazo y en el pecho.
