Apparently railways were the main target, and no ancient buildings were destroyed, the town profiting by the determination in 1844–5 of the conservatives to keep the railway station well away from the centre. Bombs fell some 22 times, and 29 persons were killed.

Sir Richard Chiverton (Skinner), mayor in 1657, was the first Cornish mayor of London. He was knighted both by Cromwell and by Charles II., which says something for his political dexterity.

(fn. 70) In 1816 St. Catharine's College exchanged land in the parish with the earl of Aylesford for 25 a. in Brinkley. (fn. 71) In 1505 William Atkinson, fellow of Pembroke Hall, Cambridge, gave to the college land in Burrough Green which in 1563 amounted to c. 25 a.
