His failure was not due to lack of ability, but being overwhelmed by England‘s growing military and economic power.

In 1276, when war broke out between Prince Llywelyn ap Gruffudd and Edward I, Madog joined the king's army. He did so to recover his lost inheritance of Meirionydd.
