The oldest colleges are University College, Balliol, and Merton, established between 1249 and 1264, although there is some dispute over the exact order and precisely when each began teaching. The fourth oldest college is Exeter, founded in 1314, and the fifth is Oriel, founded in 1326.

We are delighted to announce the results of the 2024 Louis MacNeice Creative Writing Prize. The poems and stories were all judged anonymously and, as ever, competition was fierce with a total of 16 poems and 13 short stories entered.

In 1267 this holding was converted into something like a square by the purchase of two tenements on the east side, the one known as Herprut's house, belonging to the Priory of St. Frideswide, the other, known as Halegod's house, belonging to Jacob the Jew, son of Moses the Jew.
Hace 2 días · In 1959, he was appointed Reader in Classical Archaeology at the University of Oxford, subsequently becoming a fellow of Merton College in 1963. He later held the esteemed position of Lincoln Professor of Classical Archaeology and Art, succeeding John Beazley, and was awarded the corresponding Fellowship of Lincoln College in 1978.
Hace 3 días · Merton College. Merton College Arms. (16) Merton College stands on the S. side of Merton Street. The walls are of local Oxfordshire stone and the roofs are slate-covered. The college was first founded by Walter de Merton, later Bishop of Rochester, in 1264 and moved to Oxford in 1274.

Months of being alone on its riverbank and at one with nature are being replaced now with the seasonal increase of human presence. It’s great to see so many people enjoying the river as a life tonic as the days have lengthened.
