Hace 4 días · In 1866, Prince Charles of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen was chosen prince of Romania, becoming King Carol I of Romania in 1881. Charles's elder brother, Leopold, Prince of Hohenzollern , was offered the Spanish throne in 1870 after a revolt exiled Isabella II in 1868.

Prince Karl von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, a German, was elected the new Prince of Romania on 20 April 1866, and he took the Romanian name of Carol.
