Prince Albert was born on 26 August 1819 at Schloss Rosenau, near Coburg, Germany, the second son of Ernest III, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, and his first wife, Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. His first cousin and future wife, Victoria , had been born earlier in the same year with the assistance of the same midwife, Charlotte von Siebold . [3]

In 1814, the handsome Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saafeld (after 1826, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha) visited London and met Charlotte. It was love at first sight.

Emich Carl was a wealthy nobleman who had inherited the Principality of Leiningen, an estate of over 1,700 square kilometers, in 1803 at age 39. Victoria was his second wife and a princess of the House of Wettin by birth.
