Prince Albert was born on 26 August 1819 at Schloss Rosenau, near Coburg, Germany, the second son of Ernest III, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, and his first wife, Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. His first cousin and future wife, Victoria , had been born earlier in the same year with the assistance of the same midwife, Charlotte von Siebold . [3]
Whether Charlotte can indeed be dubbed ‘Britain’s first black queen’ remains open to debate, with some historians refuting the idea. Yet she remains a fascinating figure in many respects; a German Princess who came to England in 1761 at the age of just 17, sent to marry a King who she’d never met.
