In 1510 the Ottomans invaded Imereti and sacked the capital, Kʿutʿaisi. Soon afterward, Shah Ismāʿīl I of Iran (Persia) invaded Kartli.

It held onto this title until the 5th century AD, when King Vakhtang Gorgasali located thermal waters in Abanotubani and with a little help from his falcon, moved the capital to Tbilisi.
