Hace 4 días · The first theatre on the site of the present Theatre Royal was not built until 1744 and the theatre's most flourishing period in the 18th century did not come until after Tate Wilkinson took over the management in 1766. Less formal amusements were enjoyed by the majority of the citizens.

  4. Hace 4 días · In 1768 Tate Wilkinson, then manager of the company, built a new theatre in Finkle Street, and after the granting of a royal patent in 1769 this became the Theatre Royal. The site of the Lowgate theatre was subsequently occupied by the George Yard Methodist chapel.

  5. Hace 4 días · The new manager and lessee, who took over the Theatre Royal in 1766 and remained until his death in 1803, was Tate Wilkinson. He published voluminous memoirs which give a very detailed history of the theatre during these years.
