12 de jun. de 2024 · Te Rauparaha, who did not enter the pā, attacked, killing some Ngāi Tahu and then made his escape to Kapiti Island. He was back in 1830 when he carried out an elaborate plan to get revenge for the killing of the chiefs.
12 de jun. de 2024 · Tamaiharanui was born during the late 1700s and died in 1830/31. Through his whakapapa Tamaiharanui (Te Maiharanui / Tama-i-hara-nui) belonged to Ngāti Rakiamoa (as a descendant of Tūāhuriri and Tūrakautahi) and was regarded as the paramount chief and spiritual leader of his iwi (tribe).
Hace 1 día · In 1827–28, Ngāti Toa under the leadership of Te Rauparaha successfully attacked Kāi Tahu at Kaikōura. Ngāti Toa then visited Kaiapoi, ostensibly to trade. When they attacked their hosts, the well-prepared Kāi Tahu killed all the leading Ngāti Toa chiefs except Te Rauparaha. Te Rauparaha returned to his Kapiti Island stronghold.
12 de jun. de 2024 · The distinctive whale-shaped peninsula that juts out into the water was the site of a bloody massacre when it was invaded by the Ngāti Toa chief, Te Rauparaha in 1832 following the sacking of Kaiapoi in 1831. Situated on a peninsula the pā was surrounded by the sea at high tide.

Hace 3 días · Te Rauparaha seized the land of many iwi in the lower North Island and upper South Island during the musket wars. Land was usually not given up without discussion and consultation. When an iwi was divided over the question of selling this could lead to great difficulties as at Waitara.
