Since it was first coined, the phrase has expanded to indicate cycles of dissatisfaction in other areas of life such as working a full-time job or living in a house.

In 1956 she married playwright Arthur Miller and briefly retired from moviemaking, although she costarred with Laurence Olivier in The Prince and the Showgirl (1957).
