Numerous rare plants are found on the site including Breckland thyme, perennial knawel, wall bedstraw and sickle medick. Notable numbers of nationally scarce lichens also occur.

It was said to have been founded in memory of the English and Danes who fell in a great battle near by between King Edmund and the Danish leaders Ulba and Ingwar.
