Hace 2 días · Against his wishes, his only surviving child, Elizabeth, married William, 2nd Lord Compton, later the 1st Earl of Northampton, also in 1599. Spencer died in 1610 ostensibly intestate, though Compton may have suppressed his will.

The son of William Compton, 1st earl in the Compton line (whom he succeeded in 1630), he warmly supported King Charles I.

Hace 2 días · The ornate ceilings in the south range may have been put in by William, the first Earl of Northampton (d. 1630), but if so they have had to be much restored in modern times. He probably also effected other minor alterations such as windows and doorways, fire-places and their chimneys.
