By the end of the 1950s, Desilu had become a large company, causing a good deal of stress for both Ball and Arnaz.

That was when he learned the legendary Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball were creating a new comedy series, and after some convincing, he landed the role of landlord Fred Mertz.
