9 de may. de 2024 · William Pitt, the Elder (born November 15, 1708, London—died May 11, 1778, Hayes, Kent, England) was a British statesman, twice virtual prime minister (1756–61, 1766–68), who secured the transformation of his country into an imperial power.

His father, William Pitt the Elder, was a towering figure in British politics who had served as prime minister from 1766 to 1768. Young William thus grew up steeped in political discussions and spent much of his childhood at his father‘s estate in Somerset.[^1]
