In late September 1943 the troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front, commanded by General of the Army M.F.Vatutin capturing bridgeheads on the right bank of the Dnieper, two times (from 12 to 15 and from 21 to 23 October) started an offensive to liberate Kyiv.
