It was built by Sir William Cecil from 1555–87 and is considered one of the most magnificent houses of the Elizabethan Age. Cecil, later Lord Burghley, was lord treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I and one of her key advisers.

A very interesting house with guides in most rooms who were friendly and helpful. The house might not be that engaging for young children but there is plenty outside to amuse them
