After a honeymoon the couple started living at Drakesteyn Castle. In the following years three sons were born: Willem-Alexander (1967), Johan Friso (1968) and Constantijn (1969).

He was born at the Academic Hospital, Utrecht, The Netherlands, on 27 April 1967. He is the son of Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands (born 1938) and her husband Claus von Amsberg (1926-2002), who was known as Prince Claus of the Netherlands.
