He was the last ruling duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a state of the German Empire, from 30 July 1900 to 14 November 1918.

He was created Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester on 8 December 1841, Earl of Dublin on 17 January 1850, [4] [5] [b] a Knight of the Garter on 9 November 1858, and a Knight of the Thistle on 24 May 1867.
