Emmanuel Philibert (Italian: Emanuele Filiberto; Piedmontese: Emanuel Filibert; 8 July 1528 – 30 August 1580), known as Testa di ferro (Piedmontese: Testa 'd fer; "Ironhead", because of his military career), was Duke of Savoy and ruler of the Savoyard states from 17 August 1553 until his death in 1580.
Emmanuel Philibert (born July 8, 1528, Chambéry, Savoy—died Aug. 30, 1580, Turin) was the duke of Savoy who recovered most of the lands his father Charles III had lost to France and Spain. A skilled soldier and a wily diplomat, he was also an able administrator who restored economic equilibrium to Savoy while freeing it from foreign occupation.
In 2024, Emanuele Filberto became one of two claimants to the headship of the House of Savoy after the death of his father. Emanuele Filiberto grew up in exile since the Italian constitution at the time prohibited the male issue of the Savoy kings of Italy from entering or staying on Italian territory.
From his military experience in Flanders, Emmanuel Philibert learned how to run an army, having won the famous Battle of St. Quentin. He was the first duke of Savoy to establish a stable military apparatus that was not composed of mercenaries but rather by specially trained Savoyard soldiers.
Known as 'Testa di ferro' or 'Ironhead' because of his military prowess, Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy was a skilled political strategist and one-time suitor to Lady Elizabeth Tudor, later Queen Elizabeth I. He was the second cousin and nephew by marriage of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and first cousin of his successor, Philip II of Spain.
