Unlike other institutions of Cambridge University, Jesus College was founded outside the city, on the grounds of an old Benedictine convent. With their five hundred years of history, these buildings form the core of the college, which has grown around the chapel and the cloister.

The first reference to 'Jesus' College occurs in a deed of 31 Jan. 1499 endowing a chantry fellowship in 'a college in Cambridge called Jesus College that now be or hereafter shalbe'.
