Louis XVI was the only king of France ever to be executed, and his death brought an end to more than a thousand years of continuous French monarchy.

The royal family was imprisoned in the Temple, and Louis XVI was tried for treason and executed on January 21, 1793. Marie Antoinette, now known as the "Widow Capet," remained imprisoned, separated from her children (Weber, 2006).

He was allowed to see his family one more time and then he was taken away to be executed. Marie Antoinette learned she was a widow from the sound of the cannons that accompanied the fall of the guillotine blade.
