It was a Roman and Anglo-Saxon settlement and a major market town from those times through Norman and medieval times to the present day.

Hace 3 días · The existence of a monastery in the city seems to be implied in a charter (fn. 13) of 956 by King Edwy to the 'brethren residing at Chichester,' while William of Malmesbury's (fn. 14) evidence as to a pre-Conquest minster of St. Peter, possibly of the double monastery type, would seem to be reliable.
