The city is remembered as the scene of the February (March, New Style) and October (November, New Style) Revolutions of 1917 and for its fierce defense while besieged during World War II.

Se estableció en 1895 en San Petersburgo por un decreto y real orden del emperador Nicolás II. Su gran apertura para los visitantes se produjo el 19 de marzo (07 de marzo, al viejo estilo ruso) de 1898.
