The invasion of England by Louis of France on 21 May 1216 was followed by the siege of Windsor Castle, which was held for the king by Fawkes de Breauté, a Norman adventurer, and one of the chief of John's evil counsellors, who filled the castle with a strong garrison of foreign mercenaries.

The castle is in regular occupation as a royal residence and is a conspicuous landmark for travelers approaching nearby Heathrow Airport.

Windsor Castle – Originally a wooden motte and bailey structure built in 1070, it was rebuilt in stone over subsequent centuries to become the world‘s oldest and largest occupied castle.
