La única hija legítima del rey Jacobo V de Escocia, quien murió seis días después de su nacimiento a causa de cólera —convirtiéndola en reina a la tierna edad de una semana.

Pero como si la desgracia la persiguiera, en febrero de 1567, la residencia de su esposo fue destruída por una explosión y este fue encontrado asesinado en el jardín.
