A leading advocate of federation, he was summoned by the Governor-General Lord Hopetoun [2] (after a false start) to form the first Commonwealth government.

(National Library of Australia) Sir Alexander (Alick) Downer worked as a barrister before joining the Australian Army in 1940. He was captured In Singapore in February 1942 and spent the rest of the war in Changi as a prisoner of war.

Prominent Australian artist Tom Roberts had lobbied various Australian prime ministers, starting with the first, Edmund Barton.Prime Minister Andrew Fisher accepted the idea in 1910, and the following year Parliament established a bipartisan committee of six political leaders—the Historic Memorials Committee.
