19 de may. de 2024 · The first reliable measurement of the size of the Milky Way Galaxy was made in 1917 by American astronomer Harlow Shapley. Assuming that the globular clusters outlined the Galaxy, he determined that it has a diameter of about 100,000 light-years. His values have held up remarkably well over the years.
Hace 6 días · Harlow Shapley measured the distance of globular clusters using Cepheid variables. These are huge spheroidal conglomerations consisting of thousands to millions of stars. From their position, he constructed a model of our galaxy which correctly showed that the Earth is far away from the centre of the galaxy lying outside the central bulge.
Hace 5 días · In 1920, the Shapley–Curtis debate took place between Harlow Shapley and Heber D. Curtis over this issue. Shapley argued for a small universe the size of the Milky Way galaxy, and Curtis argued that the universe was much larger. The issue was resolved in the coming decade with Hubble's improved observations.

He shared the prize with American economist Alvin E. Roth. Shapley’s father was American astronomer Harlow Shapley.
21 de may. de 2024 · The credit for her work was, at the time, largely attributed to Harlow Shapley (the director) who went on to use this discovery to calculate the size of the Milky Way. Later other astronomers, such as Edwin Hubble, came to recognise her work.
