25 de may. de 2024 · Brigadier-General John W. Geary’s division of Major-General Joseph Hooker’s Twentieth Corps led the advance, five miles ahead of the rest of the armies. Geary’s men began exchanging fire with Hood’s troops around 10 a.m., and Geary soon learned that the entire Confederate army was in the area.

His division commander, Brig. Gen. John W. Geary, received a severe wound during the action and Greene took command of the division temporarily.

A Union soldier later wrote The Charge of the Mule Brigade—based loosely on the 1854 poem The Charge of the Light Brigade.
