As the fifth emperor of the Yuan, or Mongol, dynasty, he completed the conquest of China (1279) started by Genghis Khan in 1211 and thus became the first Yuan ruler of the whole of China.

Born in 1215, he was the second son of Toluia and Sorghaghtani Beki and the grandson of the great Mongol conqueror, Genghis Khan. Kublai's mother raised him and his three brothers after their father's death.
