Sir Mackenzie Bowell was born in Rickinghall, Suffolk, England in 1823 and emigrated to Belleville, Upper Canada with his family as a young boy in 1832. Prior to entering a life of politics, Bowell made a living in the newspaper industry, becoming the owner of the Belleville Intelligencer.
