     Planet Mars One fascinating aspect of Mars is its striking red color, which is due to iron oxide, commonly known as rust, covering its surface. This gives the planet its distinct reddish appearance when viewed from Earth. What's unique about this is that Mars' surface is essentially rusting due to the presence of iron and oxygen. This process, called oxidation, is similar to what happens when iron objects on Earth are exposed to moisture and air, but it's happening on a planetary scale on Mars.
