In June 2005, Luttrell and three other Navy SEALs - Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch), and Matthew Axelson (Ben Foster) - are sent on a mission to capture or kill Ahmad Shah, a high-ranking Taliban leader.

The SEALs came under heavy gunfire, with all but Luttrell being killed in action. A Chinook helicopter sent in to rescue the SEALs was shot down, killing the entire crew aboard.
