Kyosougiga is probably the most grounded series I'll mention (which is saying something) but definitely has a similar mood to Sonny Boy in terms of how they choose to use characters. If you want to keep with the weird abstract concept but lean more into psych/horror I'd go for either Lain or Texhnolyze.
