The house itself, a large modern structure of brick and stone in the Elizabethan style, was built by the fourth marquess about 1860 and stands in a park of 650 acres.

Five hides of land in this parish were granted in the time of Henry I to the priory of Sherborne in Hampshire by Hawise wife of Henry de Port, the founder of the priory, and were confirmed to it by her son John.

The parish seems to have consisted of several vills, Hampstead, Eling, Wille, Bothampstead and Langley, but the bounds of these are not now known, except in the case of Langley.
