Sorkin initially envisioned Sheen appearing in only four or five episodes per season, but, after the show’s pilot episode aired, Sorkin decided that Sheen should be a regular cast member.

The story was adapted for the Broadway stage in 2018 by writer Aaron Sorkin. The play runs through May 12, 2024, at Atlanta's Fox Theatre.
