Arrested in 1994, he was convicted of espionage and sentenced to life in prison.

An embittered KGB expert in financial trouble, Ames had taken money from the Russians, and over the course of his relationship with the Soviets he gave up the names of multiple double agents.

He was convicted of espionage in 1994. Arrested with him was his wife, Rosario Ames, who had aided and abetted his espionage activities.
