Aunque generalmente se considera que el padre de la arqueología moderna fue el germano Johann Joachim Wincklemann, hay que tener en cuenta que esa ciencia no apareció de pronto en el siglo XVIII sino que tuvo raíces cientos de años antes, con mención especial para aquel Renacimiento italiano que recuperó el clasicismo artístico y cultural grecorromano.

Its popularity expanded throughout Europe as a generation of European art students finished their Grand Tour and returned from Italy to their home countries with newly rediscovered Greco-Roman ideals.
