  3. 21 de may. de 2024 · Capping declined in Lichfield as elsewhere in the later 16th century, but the city had over 70 tailors in 1634. Metal working was extensive. The smiths' company was recorded in 1601, with a wide range of craftsmen. The range increased in the 17th century, and in 1648 the company had 95 members.

The name Lichfield is a compound of the Celtic luitcoit and the Anglo-Saxon feld , meaning 'common pasture'. It may simply be descriptive of the area at the time of the Anglian settlement c. 600 and mean 'common pasture in (or beside) the grey wood'.

  5. 15 de may. de 2024 · In 1818 Lord Anson was succeeded by the second Viscount, who in 1831 was created Earl of Lichfield, the house being thereafter generally known as Lichfield House. As Postmaster-General Lord Lichfield was responsible for the introduction of penny postage and his residence in the square made it the scene of a quaint annual parade of mail coaches on the Queen's birthday.
