Following Melancholia, von Trier began the production of Nymphomaniac, a film about the sexual awakening of a woman played by Gainsbourg. In early December 2013, a four-hour version was shown to the press in a private preview session.
So this is von Trier’s sci-fi disaster movie. He uses the loose trappings of the genre to create a powerful metaphor for depression and the poetic connection between those emotions and the world ending in a disaster film. As of right now, I am going to say this is my favorite von Trier film. It’s a perfect film.
